Carbide Burrs

Benchmark Abrasives carries a wide range of professional quality carbide burrs, manufactured with top quality, European formulated tungsten carbide blanks.  The special Swiss designed milling machines used to make our burrs ensure sharper cuts that hold their edge longer, delivering unmatched life and quality.

Although we carry a large selection, we may not have your project specific burr.  If you can’t find the burr you are looking for give us a call 1-877-841-1837 or email us; we make custom sizes.

What are Carbide Burrs?

Carbide Burrs are also known as Rotary Burrs and are used to cut, shape, grind, remove sharp edges, burrs, and excess material (deburring). It performs the rapid removal of extra fabric. Ironically, burrs are both referred to as leftover stock chips.

The carbide burrs are often utilized in the removal of uneven edges. Also, carbide burrs are a different sort of tool used on coated abrasives before finishing or polishing.

Carbide burrs are widely used for metalwork, toolmaking, engineering, model engineering, wood carving, jewelry making, welding, chamfering, casting, deburring, grinding, plate port sculpting.

Different Carbide Burr Shapes and what they do.

Guide for following information (Industry designation - shape.  Application; ideal uses)

SA - Cylinder.  Universal Surface Grinding; ideal for contour finishing.

SB - Cylinder with End Cut.  Blind Holes & Inner Contours; ideal for finishing contour and right angled corners.

SC - Cylinder with Radius end.  Contouring & Bore Holes; ideal for machining contour and circular arc surfaces.

SD - Ball.  Contouring & Bore Holes; ideal for rounded edge processing, end deburring and end pre-machining before welding.

SE - Oval/Egg.  Molds & Contouring; ideal for rounded edge processing.

SF - Tree with Radius End.  Molds & Contouring; ideal for rounded edge processing in small places.

SG - Pointed Tree.  Chamfering & Bore Holes; ideal for processing small places and acute angles.

SH - Flame.  Molds & Contouring; ideal for rounded edge processing.

SJ - 60 degree Counter Sink.  Chamfering, Beveling & Countersinking; ideal for counterboring and chamfering bores with 60 degree angle

SK - 90 degree Counter Sink.  Chamfering, Beveling & Countersinking; ideal for counterboring and chamfering bores with 90 degree angle

SL  - Taper with Radius End.  Contouring & Difficult to Access Areas; ideal for rounded edge and surface processing in small places.

SM - Pointed Cone.  Conical Holes, Grooves & Model Building; ideal for rounded edge and surface processing in small places.

SN - Inverted Cone.  Inner Edges & conical Profiles; ideal for rearside chamfering.

Universal sizing of carbide burrs

Carbide burrs utilize a universally recognized set of standards for marking sizes and shapes, making identifying the product you need a snap.  The number in the specification of a carbide burr is the diameter of the cutting head.

41 = 1/8” head diameter

42 = 1/8” head diameter

51 = 1/4" head diameter

1 = 1/4" head diameter

3 = 3/8” head diameter

5 = 1/2" head diameter

6 = 5/8” head diameter

7 = 3/4" head diameter

How to read the carbide burr part number or specification.

At first understanding how to carbide burr part numbers can be like reading hieroglyphics, but we’re here to change that for you.  Carbide burrs are broken down into easy-to-understand call outs containing the shape, the size of the cutting head and sometimes an extra letter or two to indicate shaft length.

Example: SA5

SA = the shape (Cylindrical)

5 = the size (5’s are 1/2” cutting head diameter)

Example: SC3L

SC = the shape (Cylinder with Radius End)

3 = the size (3’s are 3/8” cutting head diameter)

L = special length burr (Long Shank burr)

Different types of carbide burr cut patterns and what they are used for.

There are three main types of cut patterns and a few additional less popular cut patterns.  The most commonly found styles are Single Cut Carbide Burrs, Double Cut Carbide Burrs and Aluminum Cut Carbide Burrs (aka Aluma cut).

  1. Single Cut – single cut burrs are a general purpose product suitable for machining cast iron, steel and stainless steel with hardnesses less than HRC60.  Due to the quality of finish our Double Cut burrs leave behind, we don’t stock the single cut burrs.  Contact us for custom orders!
  2. Double Cut – double cut burrs employ a “double cut” or “double tooth” cut pattern to provide versatile cutting action, granular chip break and aggressive stock removal all while keeping a smooth finish and improved operator control.
  3. Aluma Cut – wide cut flutes for fast and easy stock removal without the hassle of loading up.  They are suitable for machining aluminum, nonferrous metals and plastics.

Most manufacturers will identify the cut pattern in their part number with an S for Single Cut, D for Double Cut and NF for Aluma Cut (the NF stands for Non-Ferrous).

Other lesser-known cut types are really for specialty uses.  Here are a list of the specialty cuts we can offer:

  1. Coarse cut
  2. Fine Cut
  3. Tough Cut
  4. Diamond Cut
  5. Chip Break Cut
  6. Steel Cut
  7. INOX Cut
