Coated Abrasives

The coated abrasive is a product that consists of a thin layer of abrasive grain attached to a substrate such as paper, cloth, etc. These coated abrasives are made from loose abrasive grains bonded to a backing. Coated abrasives are available in sandpaper sheets, shop rolls, flap discs, spiral bands, and sanding belts and are used primarily for finishing and light-to-medium grinding. There are two types of abrasive coatings used in the construction of coated abrasives i.e. open coat and closed coat. They are named Coated because a coating of adhesive is applied to the backing to attach a single layer of abrasive grain.
