What Is Hook and Loop Sandpaper?
Hook and loop sandpaper (sometimes called Velcro sanding discs) attaches to a compatible orbital or random orbital sander with a reusable mechanical fastening system. The backing pad carries small hooks; the back of the disc carries loops that grip those hooks when the disc is pressed into place.
This attachment method lets the operator install discs without adhesive or retaining nuts, change grits in seconds, remove a partially used disc and reinstall it later, and keep several grits on hand during a multi-step process.

Do not start coarser than necessary. Every deep scratch a coarse disc creates must be removed later. When the surface is already relatively smooth, starting finer reduces total sanding time, the risk of sanding through coatings, and the number of finishing steps.
Avoid large grit jumps. Each grit should remove the scratch pattern from the previous grit. 80 - 120 - 180 - 220 is usually more efficient than jumping from 80 to 220; skipped grits leave deep scratches that only become visible after paint, stain, or clear coat goes on.
Choosing the Correct Disc Size
5-inch discs suit general shop use, furniture and cabinetry, contoured work, tight areas, and common electric random orbital sanders. Easier to maneuver and control around edges.
6-inch discs suit larger panels, automotive bodywork, fabricated metal surfaces, and production sanding. More coverage per pass on large, flat surfaces, and common on pneumatic and industrial sanders.
Never install a disc smaller or larger than the backing pad unless the tool and accessory manufacturers approve that configuration.
Choosing the Correct Hole Pattern
The holes in a sanding disc let dust move through the backing pad into the tool's dust-collection system. Benchmark stocks: 5-inch in no-hole, 5-hole, and 8-hole; 6-inch in no-hole and 6-hole.
Choose a holed disc when the sander has a matching multi-hole pad and is connected to a vacuum or dust collector, when dust loading is shortening disc life, or when fine dust could contaminate the finish.
Choose a no-hole disc when the pad has no extraction holes or the tool is not connected to dust collection.
A disc with the wrong hole pattern may still attach, but blocked extraction holes kill dust-collection performance. Before ordering, check: disc diameter, number of holes, hole location, and the tool manufacturer's requirements.

Industrial buyers should evaluate abrasives on cost per completed part, not cost per disc: abrasive cost per part = total abrasive cost divided by acceptable completed parts. A higher-priced disc is often the lower-cost option when it lasts longer or reduces labor and rework.
Common Hook and Loop Sanding Mistakes
- Ordering the wrong hole pattern. A disc can fit the pad while blocking its extraction holes. Match diameter, hole count, and hole location before ordering.
- Using too much pressure. Excess pressure creates heat, slows the random orbital action, and produces pigtail marks. Let the abrasive cut; if a disc only works under heavy pressure, replace it or change grit.
- Starting too coarse. Begin with the finest grit that removes the existing defect efficiently.
- Skipping too many grits. A fine disc polishes the peaks of a coarse scratch without removing its depth. Advance through a controlled sequence.
- Sanding with a loaded disc. Dust, resin, and paint fill the abrasive. Improve extraction, reduce pressure, and replace the disc when it stops cutting.
- Tilting the sander. Edge-running concentrates the abrasive and gouges the surface. Keep the pad flat.
- Continuing after the disc stops cutting. A dull disc generates heat and invites more pressure. Replace on cutting performance, not visible wear.
- Ignoring the backing pad. Worn hooks, heat damage, torn edges, or uneven foam cause discs to detach, vibrate, or sand unevenly. Inspect the pad regularly and replace it when grip fails.
Getting the Most From Every Disc
Use the correct grit for the removal rate, keep the tool flat and moving, let the sander reach speed before contact, overlap passes, run dust extraction, and clean the workpiece between grits. Store partially used discs separated by grit, and never reuse a disc from carbon steel on stainless when cross-contamination could affect the part.
