Resin Fiber Discs: Storage And Handling

The handling and storage of coated abrasives is one of the most crucial aspects of the job. Your items must be handled and stored correctly if you want them to function at their best. Inadequate storage might shorten the abrasive usable life and pose safety risks.

Resin fiber discs and other coated abrasives need to be stored with a bit of extra care since the adhesives and backings might be sensitive to changes in temperature and will absorb or lose moisture based on their surroundings.

As moisture content drops, coated abrasives become more effective. However, problems like curling or brittleness may arise if you let your resin fiber disc or coated abrasive get overly dry. As the abrasive dries up, handling will become more challenging. For best results, their optimum environment is kept at a humidity level between 40 and 50 percent, which is similar to the ideal range for a home (30 to 50 percent).

OPTIMAL RESIN FIBER DISC STORAGE AND HANDLING CONDITIONS

As previously indicated, a humidity range of 40–50% and a constant temperature of 70–75°F (21–24°C) would be the optimal storage conditions to guarantee the highest performance levels of resin fiber discs and other coated materials. To extend the life of your goods, keep your stock inside and away from any direct vents, inlets, radiators, etc.

  • Until they are intended to be utilized, resin fiber discs and other coated abrasives should be stored in a closed carton or storage box, sealed tightly.
  • Until the product is required, cartons, boxes, and wrapped rolls should be kept undamaged.
  • It is best to store wrapped rolls, cartons, and boxes flat rather than upright.

Properly storing unwanted supplies prolongs the life of your product and reduces wasteful spending and safety risks! Every year, money is saved with proper storage!

CHECKING YOUR RESIN FIBER DISCS FOR INDICATORS OF UNSUITABLE STORAGE

The softening of glue bonds, the resin coating on adhesive products, and the filler ingredient used in textile finishing are all signs of excessive humidity. Because of this, the abrasive grains are forced into the backing instead of penetrating the material being worked on. Friction heat generated during the use of the coated abrasive will further soften the binding. At that point, the coated abrasive will rapidly begin to load and burn the material being worked on. Prolonged exposure to high humidity levels might cause a product's performance to decline by up to 50%.

CURLED/WARPED RESIN FIBER DISC

Resin fiber discs with a cloth backing may hold onto moisture and curl towards the grain, making them momentarily useless. Overly dryness may manifest as a loss of flexibility, making handling challenging. Resin fiber discs with a fabric backing that has dried out will curl away from the grain.

A curled or bent resin fiber disc is not a loss in any case!

When placed on the appropriate rubber backing pad, they will often straighten out unless they are highly curled. When the nut is tight enough, the disc will flatten down and become functional.

Occasionally, variations in temperature during shipment may result in slight curling of your fiber discs when they arrive in the mail. Your discs are still functional even if they are curled or have a slight curvature in them. It is a really simple remedy.

Alternatively, you can store them flat and let them level out before using them by placing some weight on top of them. The method for flattening a rolled-up rug is the same.

Testing your discs for brittleness and other safety concerns, as previously indicated, is crucial. It's always best to prioritize safety and throw away old or dubious discs if you are unsure of their age and they do seem unduly brittle. It's critical to create a secure working environment for yourself.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR STORAGE UNDER UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS

A spindle that will maintain the flatness of your resin fiber discs or other coated abrasives is a backup plan in case you are unable to offer the best storage option. Additionally, they are not too difficult to make yourself.

Purchasing goods from a reliable vendor is crucial at all times. At Benchmark Abrasives, we take great satisfaction in offering high-quality products along with excellent customer service. Our warehouse is climate-controlled, and all of our resin fiber discs and abrasive items are kept there. We rotate our collection frequently in order to keep old discs out of stock.
