3" CURVED QUICK CHANGE ZIRCONIA FLAP DISCS

Benchmark Abrasives 3" curved quick change zirconia flap discs are built for aggressive grinding where flat abrasives cannot do the whole job. The extended curved flaps let you work with both the face and the edge of the disc, making them especially effective for fillet weld cleanup, inside corners, tight radii, weld spatter removal, deburring, deflashing, and contour blending. Premium European zirconia cloth delivers an aggressive cut, while each disc packs 25–50% more abrasive material per flap than competing flap discs for more usable abrasive and stronger value on demanding jobs.

Zirconia's self-sharpening action continually exposes fresh cutting edges as the flaps wear, helping maintain strong stock-removal performance under the heat and pressure common in metal fabrication. The 3" diameter gives you more working coverage than the 2" version while still maintaining the compact control needed around welds, contours, fabricated parts, and non-flat surfaces. Zirconia also tolerates higher heat and pressure than aluminum oxide, making it a strong choice for carbon and mild steel as well as stainless steel, aluminum, and other alloys.

These discs are designed for consistent construction from disc to disc. The T27 flat-face profile provides controlled face grinding, while the curved abrasive edge reaches into weld radii and internal corners, giving you two useful working surfaces in one compact Type R quick change disc.

Materials & Applications

Common Materials

  • Carbon Steel
  • Mild Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Titanium
  • Nickel
  • Wrought Iron
  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Other Alloys
  • Fiberglass
  • Plastic
  • Hard Rubber
  • Wood
  • Stone

Common Applications

  • Fillet weld grinding and cleanup
  • Inside corner grinding
  • Weld line and weld spatter removal
  • Contour blending
  • Aggressive stock removal
  • Deburring
  • Deflashing
  • Rust removal
  • Edge cleanup
  • Surface blending
  • Grinding broader welds and fabricated areas
  • Grinding in narrow or confined areas

Choose the least aggressive grit that will remove material efficiently, then move to finer grits as the work transitions from grinding into blending and surface refinement.

Machine Compatibility

Designed for rotary sanding and grinding tools using a matching 3" Type R backing pad.

Recommended Benchmark Abrasives Tools

  • Benchmark Abrasives Right Angle Pneumatic Quick Change Sander
  • Benchmark Abrasives Pneumatic Quick Change Sander – Pistol Grip

Also suitable for properly matched die grinders, electric drills, hand-held pneumatic grinders, and other compatible rotary tools using the correct holder and speed rating.

Safety Tips

  • Inspect the disc and holder before each use
  • Fully secure the disc to the Type R holder before operating
  • Never exceed the maximum RPM of the lowest-rated component
  • Use dry only
  • Use only the face and curved abrasive edge as intended
  • Use a lighter touch or feathered approach when less stock removal is desired
  • Wear proper eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
  • Keep all machine guards in place
  • Follow the tool manufacturer's operating and safety instructions

Frequently Asked Questions

Use a matching 3" Type R holder. Compatible choices include the Benchmark Abrasives BMT-QC90 Right Angle and BMT-QCPG Pistol Grip Quick Change Sanders. Other verified examples include Milwaukee 2984-20 with a suitable 1/4" shank holder and Dynabrade 48530, 48531, or 48532 with the matching 51346 Type R pad. Always confirm the RPM rating of the complete assembly.
The curved abrasive flaps let you grind into fillet welds, inside corners, tight radii, and other areas that are difficult to reach with a standard flat mini flap disc. You can use both the face and curved edge of the disc.
Choose the curved version when the job involves fillet welds, internal corners, contours, or tight radii. A standard mini flap disc is generally better when most of the work will be done with the face of the disc.
Zirconia is self-sharpening and performs well under heat and pressure. As the abrasive wears, fresh cutting edges are exposed, helping maintain aggressive stock removal during demanding metalworking applications.
The 3" disc provides more abrasive surface and greater working coverage for broader welds and larger fabricated areas. The 2" version is generally better when maximum access and localized control are the priority.
No. Carbon and mild steel are primary applications, but these discs can also be used on stainless steel, aluminum, copper, titanium, nickel, and other compatible materials.
The flat face provides controlled grinding and blending across the face of the disc, while the curved abrasive edge adds access for fillet welds and internal corners.
Use a matching 3" Type R quick change backing pad. The holder is sold separately.
No. These zirconia curved flap discs are intended for dry use only.
Available grits are 36, 40, 60, 80, and 120.
No. 25,000 RPM is the maximum rated speed. Never exceed the RPM rating of the lowest-rated component in the disc, holder, and tool assembly.
