Product Specification

4" X 1/2" FLANNEL CUSHION SEWN BUFFING WHEEL WITH 1/4" MANDREL

Bring final polishing directly to the workpiece with our 4" flannel cushion sewn buffing wheel. Made from extremely soft flannel, this wheel is designed for final coloring and high-gloss polishing where minimal cutting action is important. The soft, conformable face follows curves and contours easily, making it a strong choice for aluminum, brass, copper, precious metals, plated surfaces, plastics, and other delicate finishes.

Unlike traditional arbor-mounted bench buffing wheels, this version includes an integrated 1/4" ball-groove quick-change shank for use with compatible drills and drivers. That makes it especially useful for polishing larger assemblies, installed components, irregular shapes, or parts that are inconvenient to bring to a stationary buffer. Pair it with the appropriate finishing compound to develop a bright, highly reflective finish while maintaining good control over the polishing process.

  • Cushion-sewn construction provides light support while remaining conformable.
  • Low cutting action helps preserve delicate surfaces.
  • 4" diameter provides good control for handheld polishing.
  • Integrated 1/4" quick-change shank eliminates the need for a separate arbor.
  • Conforms well to curves, contours, and shaped surfaces.
  • Reusable with proper care.
  • Made in the USA.

Machines Used On

Designed for use with compatible:

  • Electric drills
  • Cordless drills
  • 1/4" quick-change compatible drivers

The integrated mandrel makes this wheel particularly convenient for portable polishing and working on larger or difficult-to-position parts that may not be practical to bring to a bench buffer.

Applications

Ideal for final polishing and coloring of:

  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Chrome and nickel-plated surfaces
  • Plastics
  • Lacquered surfaces
  • Other delicate surfaces where minimal material removal is desired

Use extra care with plastics, lacquer, and plated surfaces to minimize heat and avoid damaging the finish.

Polishing Performance

Cut Very Low
Gloss Very High
Stage Final Polish / Coloring
Wheel Firmness Very Soft
Best For Portable final polishing with minimal surface removal

Tip: Flannel is a finishing wheel, not a scratch-removal wheel. Complete any cutting or surface refinement with the appropriate firmer wheel and compound before switching to flannel for the final gloss.

4" X 1/2" Flannel Cushion Sewn Buffing Wheel

For best results, dedicate one buffing wheel to each compound. This prevents residue from a more aggressive compound from contaminating your final polishing stage.

Safety Tips & Techniques

  • Apply a small amount of compound to the spinning wheel rather than overloading it.
  • Use light pressure and allow the wheel and compound to produce the finish.
  • Keep the wheel moving across the workpiece to control heat buildup.
  • Use especially light pressure when polishing plastics, plated surfaces, and lacquer.
  • Clean the workpiece before changing compounds or polishing stages.
  • Wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
  • Confirm that the wheel and shank are securely mounted before use.
  • Always operate within the limits of the wheel and power tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flannel buffing wheels are primarily used for final polishing and coloring. Their extremely soft construction produces high gloss with very little material removal.
The integrated 1/4" ball-groove quick-change shank allows the wheel to mount directly into compatible drills and drivers without requiring a separate buffing-wheel arbor. This makes it a convenient option for portable polishing.
Both wheels use soft flannel for final polishing. The 4" version has an integrated 1/4" quick-change shank for handheld power tools, while the 6" wheel has a 1" arbor and is intended primarily for stationary buffing equipment.
Not as a first step. Flannel has very little cutting action. Remove scratches, sanding marks, oxidation, and other imperfections with the appropriate cutting or polishing wheel before moving to flannel for the final finish.
Yes. Flannel works well for final coloring and high-gloss polishing on aluminum, brass, copper, and other softer metals when paired with the appropriate finishing compound.
Yes. The very soft flannel construction makes it particularly well suited for final polishing of gold, silver, and other precious metals where minimal material removal is important.
Yes. Flannel is a good choice for final polishing of compatible plastics when paired with a plastic-specific compound. Use light pressure and keep the wheel moving because excessive friction can quickly generate heat.
We recommend one wheel per compound. Mixing compounds on the same wheel can transfer more aggressive abrasive particles into a finer polishing stage and potentially reintroduce scratches.
Choose the compound based on the material and desired finish. Jeweler's Rouge is commonly used for precious metals, while other fine coloring compounds can be used for metals and plated surfaces. Use a plastic-specific compound when polishing compatible plastics or lacquered surfaces.
Yes. The flannel wheel carries the polishing compound against the surface. The compound provides the polishing action while the soft flannel wheel helps develop the final color and gloss.
