4-1/2" X 4" FELT BUFFING DRUM
Refine large metal surfaces while maintaining excellent control with our 4-1/2" x 4" felt buffing drum. This felt drum has a firmer working face than our spiral-sewn muslin drum, giving it the support needed for controlled polishing, surface refinement, and developing an even finish before moving into the finer polishing stages. Its wide 4" face covers panels, plate, tubing, and fabricated assemblies efficiently while maintaining consistent contact with the workpiece.
The drum format also provides one of the biggest advantages of linear finishing equipment: a straight-line finish instead of the circular or orbital patterns commonly left by DA sanders and angle grinders. Pair the felt drum with the appropriate polishing compound, paste, or liquid polish to refine the prepared surface and develop luster. When an even finer, softer polishing action is desired, follow with the spiral-sewn muslin drum and the appropriate finishing compound.

Machines Used On
Designed for compatible:
- Surface finishing machines
- Linear grinders
- Burnishers
- Contouring grinders
- Drum sanding and polishing machines
These machines allow the drum to work consistently in the direction of the desired grain, making them especially useful for producing a uniform straight-line finish across visible metal surfaces.
This drum requires a compatible keyed drum-mounting system. Confirm machine compatibility before use.
Not intended for electric drills.
Materials & Applications
Best For
- Aluminum
- Brass
- Copper
- Stainless steel
- Steel
- Other materials compatible with felt polishing and the selected compound
Common Applications
- Surface refinement after sanding or conditioning
- Intermediate polishing
- Straight-line finishing
- Refining fine sanding or polishing marks
- Developing luster before finer finishing
- Sheet metal and plate
- Stainless steel panels and decorative surfaces
- Tubing and curved components
- Large fabricated assemblies
- Broad flat and contoured metal surfaces
The selected compound determines much of the actual polishing action, so match the compound to the material and the amount of surface refinement required.
Polishing Performance
| Cut | Low–Medium |
| Gloss | Medium–High |
| Stage | Surface Refinement / Intermediate Polish |
| Drum Firmness | Firm |
| Finish Pattern | Straight-Line / Linear |
| Coverage | High |
| Best For | Controlled refinement before finer polishing |
Tip: Use the felt drum when the surface still needs controlled refinement and polishing support. Once the surface is even and well prepared, move to the softer spiral-sewn muslin drum when finer polishing and greater luster are desired.
For the most consistent straight-line appearance, work in a controlled direction with the grain rather than moving randomly across the surface.

The firmer felt face provides support while the compound performs much of the actual cutting and polishing action.
For best results, dedicate one drum to each compound and clean the workpiece thoroughly before progressing to a finer polishing stage.
Safety Tips & Techniques
- Never exceed the 4,000 RPM maximum operating speed.
- Use only with a compatible drum-style finishing machine.
- Use dry only.
- Work in a consistent direction to maintain an even straight-line finish.
- Apply compound sparingly rather than heavily loading the drum.
- Use controlled pressure and allow the drum and compound to perform the polishing.
- Keep the drum moving evenly across the workpiece to control heat.
- Clean the workpiece before changing compounds or polishing stages.
- Use extra care around edges, seams, corners, and projections.
- Confirm that the drum is securely mounted before use.
-
- Keep applicable machine guards in place.
