SF-51 TREE SHAPE RADIUS DOUBLE CUT CARBIDE BURR – 1/8" SHANK
The Benchmark Abrasives SF-51 Tree Shape Radius Premium Tungsten Carbide Burr is built for fabricators, machinists, welders, and metalworkers who need controlled cutting performance on rounded contours, edge transitions, and detailed shaping work. Unlike lower quality burrs that may use hollow heads or inconsistent brazing, Benchmark carbide burrs feature a solid carbide head with a silver-brazed connection to the shank. The result is a strong, stable cutting tool designed for demanding deburring, contouring, edge rounding, and localized material-removal applications.
The SF-51 combines that premium construction with a 1/4" tree-shaped head, rounded radius end, and double-cut tooth pattern. Its tapered profile provides a gradual change in cutting diameter for working along rounded contours and transitional surfaces, while the radius end helps soften edges and blend curved features without the sharp point of a pointed-tree burr.
Its 1/8" shank makes the SF-51 well suited for compatible rotary tools and precision grinders equipped with the correct 1/8" collet or chuck. The standard-length 1/4" head is rated for a maximum speed of 70,000 RPM, providing broader cutting coverage than the smaller SF-41 while retaining good control for detailed contouring.

Applications
The SF-51 tree radius-end profile is well suited for:
- Rounded contours
- Edge rounding
- Blended transitions
- Curved interior features
- Recess shaping
- Detailed deburring
- Weld cleanup
- Localized stock removal
- General fabrication and maintenance work
Materials
Recommended primarily for:
- Steel
- Stainless steel
- Cast iron
Also suitable for additional materials when the correct operating speed and technique are used, including titanium, nickel, wrought iron, copper, fiberglass, plastic, hard rubber, wood, and stone.
Machine Compatibility
Designed for rotary tools, precision grinders, and other compatible machines equipped with a properly sized 1/8" collet or chuck.
Compatible examples include Dremel® 4300, 4000, and 3000 fitted with a Dremel 480 1/8" collet and matching collet nut. The 4300 can also hold the 1/8" shank in its keyless chuck.
Always confirm the 1/8" shank is securely seated in the correct collet or chuck before operation. A 1/8" shank is not interchangeable with 3 mm tooling.
Cutting Performance
The SF-51 tree radius-end shape combines a tapered body with a rounded tip, giving it a smooth progression of cutting diameters from the wider body toward the end. This geometry is especially useful for rounded contours, edge transitions, recessed shapes, and areas where a gradual change in contact width improves control.
The rounded end distinguishes the SF profile from a pointed-tree burr by providing a softer transition into curved features and helping shape or round edges without concentrating the cut at a sharp point. The double-cut tooth pattern divides removed material into smaller chips for controlled stock removal and a smoother working action than a comparable single-cut burr.
Compared with the smaller SF-41, the 1/4" head provides broader cutting contact while retaining the same tree radius-end geometry for contouring and edge work.
Carbide burrs are primarily cutting and shaping tools; applications requiring a refined cosmetic finish should be followed with the appropriate abrasive finishing process.
Use the chart above to select the recommended operating-speed range based on the 1/4" burr head diameter and workpiece material.
Do not exceed the 70,000 RPM maximum speed for this standard-length 1/4" carbide burr. Always operate within the lower maximum speed of the burr, machine, collet, chuck, or accessory system.
Safety Tips
- Always wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
- Secure the workpiece before beginning operation.
- Confirm the 1/8" shank is properly seated and securely tightened in the correct collet or chuck.
- Use light, controlled pressure and allow the carbide cutting edges to remove the material.
- Keep the burr moving during cutting rather than holding it stationary against the workpiece.
- Maintain controlled movement when working around edges and curved transitions.
- Avoid excessive force, which can increase heat, vibration, and premature cutting-edge wear.
- Select operating speed according to burr diameter, workpiece material, machine requirements, and the recommended operating-speed chart.
- Never exceed 70,000 RPM.
- Stop immediately if excessive vibration, chatter, unusual noise, or visible damage occurs.
- Do not use a damaged, chipped, bent, or improperly mounted carbide burr.
