BELT BUTTER ABRASIVE LIFE EXTENDER GREASE
Benchmark Abrasives belt butter is a life-extending grease formulated to help coated abrasives cut more efficiently while reducing heat, loading, and gumming during use. It is most commonly used on sanding belts, where a light application can help keep the abrasive cutting instead of filling with material.
Belt butter can also be used with cloth-backed PSA sanding discs, including Benchmark Abrasives aluminum oxide and zirconia discs from 5" through 12". For metalworking, fabrication, woodworking, and other demanding sanding applications, it provides a simple way to help reduce friction and get more useful cutting life from the abrasive.

Why Use Abrasive Life Extender Grease?
Heat and material buildup can reduce an abrasive's cutting performance before the abrasive grain itself is fully worn out. Applying Belt Butter helps lubricate the contact area, reducing friction and helping prevent debris from packing into the abrasive surface.
The result is a cleaner-cutting abrasive that can stay productive longer, particularly in applications where heat and loading are common.
How to Use Belt Butter
Apply Belt Butter lightly to the abrasive surface while the machine is running, following normal machine safety practices.
For sanding belts, briefly touch the Belt Butter to the moving abrasive to leave a light coating across the working area.
For PSA discs, apply only a small amount to the abrasive face. Reapply as needed rather than heavily coating the disc.
A light application is usually all that is needed.
Common Applications
Useful when sanding materials or performing operations where heat and loading can reduce abrasive life, including:
- Metal grinding and sanding
- Weld blending
- Deburring
- Surface preparation
- Stock removal
- Wood sanding
- Paint and coating removal
- Fabrication work
- General shop sanding
Belt Butter vs. Abrasive Cleaning Stick
Belt Butter and abrasive cleaning sticks solve different problems.
Belt Butter is used during sanding to help reduce heat, friction, loading, and gumming before they become severe.
Abrasive cleaning sticks are used to remove material that has already built up on the abrasive surface.
For applications prone to loading, the two can complement each other: Belt Butter helps prevent buildup, while a cleaning stick can help restore an abrasive that has already become loaded.
Tips for Better Results
- Use a light application rather than saturating the abrasive.
- Reapply only when cutting performance begins to drop or friction increases.
- Keep Belt Butter away from surfaces that must remain completely free of lubricant or residue.
- Clean the workpiece as needed before painting, coating, welding, bonding, or other finishing operations.
- Keep all machine guards in place during use.
- Use appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
Get More Useful Life from Your Abrasives
Sanding belts and cloth-backed PSA discs are consumables, but heat and loading can shorten their useful cutting life before the abrasive grain is fully worn. Belt Butter helps keep coated abrasives working longer by reducing friction, heat, and material buildup at the sanding surface.
For shops that go through belts or heavy-duty PSA discs regularly, a small amount of Belt Butter can help improve abrasive efficiency and reduce unnecessary belt and disc changes.
