4-1/2" X 7/8" SURFACE CONDITIONING FLAP DISC TYPE 29 (ANGLED FACE)

Benchmark Abrasives 4-1/2" x 7/8" type 29 surface conditioning flap discs combine the familiar working action of a flap disc with flexible nonwoven surface conditioning material for controlled cleaning, blending, light deburring, and finish refinement. Aluminum oxide abrasive is distributed through the open nonwoven flaps to refine weld areas, blend scratches, remove light surface oxidation, and produce a brushed or lightly grained finish without the aggressive stock removal of a conventional coated-abrasive flap disc.

The Type 29 angled face is well suited to working flat surfaces, including bead welds on plate and other broad workpieces. The angled profile gives the operator a more ergonomic approach to the surface while maintaining consistent contact across the working face. Available in Coarse, Medium, and a Blue finishing grade, these discs are especially useful on stainless steel and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals when the goal is surface refinement rather than heavy grinding.

Type 29 Angled Face

The Type 29 angled face is the preferred Benchmark Abrasives flap-disc geometry for flat surfaces, including bead welds, plate, panels, and other broad workpieces. The angled profile allows the operator to approach the surface more naturally while keeping the working face engaged with the material.

For non-flat, shaped, or contoured workpieces such as fence posts, gates, risers, railings, and tubing, consider the Benchmark Abrasives Type 27 surface conditioning flap disc, whose flat face is better suited to maneuvering around changing geometry.

Performance

Surface conditioning flaps are designed for controlled cleaning, blending, light deburring, and finish refinement rather than heavy material removal. The layered flap construction provides a broad working surface while the flexible nonwoven material conforms to the workpiece and produces a brushed or lightly grained finish.

Select the grade according to the amount of cleaning and refinement required. Final appearance depends on the selected grade, starting surface, workpiece material, operating speed, pressure, and technique. For substantial weld or stock removal, use an appropriate grinding or coated abrasive first, then follow with the surface conditioning flap disc to refine the surface.

Machine Compatibility

Designed for compatible 4-1/2" angle grinders that accept 7/8" plain-bore flap discs using the proper flange, retaining nut, and approved guard.

For finishing performance, Benchmark Abrasives recommends operating these surface conditioning flap discs in the 4,000–5,000 RPM range. A variable-speed angle grinder capable of operating within this range is preferred.

The disc mounts directly with the grinder's compatible flange and retaining hardware. No separate backing pad is required.

Safety Tips

  • Never exceed the disc's maximum speed of 13,300 RPM.
  • For best finishing performance, operate within the recommended 4,000–5,000 RPM working range.
  • Verify that the grinder, flange, retaining nut, guard, and disc are compatible before use.
  • The 7/8" dimension is a plain arbor bore, not a threaded 5/8"-11 attachment.
  • Inspect the disc for damage before mounting or use.
  • Use the required grinder guard and side handle.
  • Wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
  • Use controlled pressure and allow the surface conditioning material to refine the workpiece.
  • Follow the operating and safety instructions supplied with the grinder.

Frequently Asked Questions

A conventional coated-abrasive flap disc is designed primarily for grinding and material removal. This disc uses nonwoven surface conditioning flaps for cleaning, blending, light deburring, and finish refinement when preserving the underlying surface is more important than aggressive stock removal.
The angled face provides comfortable working contact for blending and finishing flat surfaces such as plate and weld areas. The flexible nonwoven flaps can also follow edges and contours.
Choose Type 29 primarily for flat surfaces such as bead welds and plate. Choose Type 27 for non-flat, shaped, or contoured surfaces such as posts, gates, railings, risers, and tubing.
It is intended primarily for surface conditioning and refinement. For significant weld or stock removal, use an appropriate grinding or coated abrasive first, then follow with this disc for blending and finishing.
These discs are designed to produce a brushed or lightly grained finish. The exact appearance depends on the selected grade, starting surface, material, operating speed, pressure, and technique.
Choose Coarse for stronger cleaning, Medium for blending, and the Fine finishing grade for finer surface refinement. These are nonwoven grades rather than standardized coated-abrasive grit numbers.
The disc has a maximum rated speed of 13,300 RPM, while the recommended working range for surface conditioning is 4,000–5,000 RPM. Maximum RPM is a safety ceiling, not the preferred finishing speed.
No. The flap disc mounts directly to a compatible angle grinder using the proper flange and retaining nut.
No. The 7/8" measurement refers to the plain center bore. It is not a 5/8"-11 threaded attachment and is not an X-LOCK® disc.
Examples that match the disc’s size and speed requirements include the U.S.-specification Makita 9564CV, XAG16Z, and XAG20Z. Use the tool’s approved 4-1/2" setup with a flange and retaining nut for the 7/8" plain bore, plus the appropriate guard. Set the working speed to the recommended 4,000–5,000 RPM range.
