Product Specification

4-1/2" X 7/8" ZIRCONIA RESIN FIBER DISC – 25 PACK

Benchmark Abrasives 4-1/2" zirconia resin fiber discs are built for aggressive grinding, stock removal, weld removal, beveling, and surface preparation where longer abrasive life and stronger cutting performance are needed. Zirconia alumina grain is tougher than standard aluminum oxide and continually exposes fresh cutting edges under pressure, making it a strong choice for demanding metalworking and fabrication applications.

Each disc uses premium zirconia alumina abrasive bonded to a heavy-duty vulcanized fiber backing with heat-resistant resin. The rigid fiber backing supports the abrasive during grinding and helps transfer pressure efficiently to the workpiece for controlled, consistent stock removal. Available in grits from aggressive 24 grit through finer 120 grit, these discs can handle heavy grinding, weld leveling, blending, deburring, and preparation for subsequent finishing operations.

These discs are designed for use on right-angle grinders with a compatible 4-1/2" backing pad. A backing pad is required and sold separately.

Machines Used On

  • Right-angle grinders rated for 4-1/2" accessories
  • Angle Grinders rated for 4-1/2" accessories

Backing Pad Required: Use with a compatible 4-1/2" x 5/8"-11 resin fiber disc backing pad. Backing pads are sold separately.

Use only with a grinder, guard, backing pad, and retaining hardware approved for the same disc diameter and attachment. The grinder's rated speed must not exceed the maximum RPM of the lowest-rated component in the system.

Applications

Ideal for demanding grinding and surface preparation applications including:

  • Heavy stock removal
  • Weld removal and weld leveling
  • Weld blending
  • Beveling and edge preparation
  • Deburring
  • Shaping and contouring
  • Rust and corrosion removal
  • Paint and coating removal
  • Cleaning and surface preparation
  • Blending and smoothing

Materials

Commonly used on:

  • Carbon Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Titanium
  • Nickel
  • Wrought Iron
  • Copper
  • Fiberglass
  • Plastics and Composites
  • Hard Rubber
  • Wood
  • Stone

Benchmark's existing product specifications list these zirconia fiber discs for ferrous materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, titanium, nickel, and wrought iron; non-ferrous copper; and additional materials including fiberglass, plastic, hard rubber, wood, and stone.

Tip: Zirconia performs best when enough grinding pressure is applied to continually fracture the abrasive grain and expose fresh cutting edges. Using too little pressure can reduce the self-sharpening effect and limit performance.

Aluminum Oxide vs. Zirconia vs. Ceramic

Aluminum Oxide:
Aluminum Oxide is the economical choice for routine grinding, lighter-duty applications, and general shop work.
Zirconia:
Zirconia is the step-up choice when you need more aggressive stock removal, longer abrasive life, and stronger performance under sustained grinding pressure. It is particularly well suited to fabrication, weld removal, beveling, and demanding steel applications.
Ceramic:
Ceramic is the premium option for the highest-production grinding applications, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, hard metals, and situations where maximum cutting speed, cooler grinding, and abrasive life justify the higher cost.

For most users who want a noticeable performance upgrade over aluminum oxide without moving to the cost of ceramic, Zirconia provides an excellent balance of cutting speed, durability, and value.

Safety Tips & Techniques

  • Always use a compatible backing pad specifically designed for resin fiber discs.
  • Inspect the disc and backing pad before use. Do not use damaged, cracked, torn, or moisture-compromised discs.
  • Never operate the grinder above the maximum RPM marked for the disc or backing pad. The grinder's rated speed must not exceed the lowest accessory rating; follow all tool and accessory instructions.
  • Keep the grinder guard properly installed and positioned.
  • Use appropriate eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, protective clothing, and respiratory protection for the material being worked.
  • Allow the zirconia grain to cut under consistent working pressure rather than forcing the grinder excessively.
  • Keep the grinder moving across the workpiece to help control heat and avoid gouging.
  • Store fiber discs in a clean, dry environment to protect the backing from moisture and damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zirconia resin fiber discs are designed for aggressive grinding and material removal applications including weld removal, stock removal, beveling, deburring, shaping, rust removal, blending, and surface preparation. Their durable, self-sharpening abrasive makes them especially effective for sustained grinding applications.
Zirconia is tougher and generally lasts longer than standard aluminum oxide when used under sustained grinding pressure. Its self-sharpening grain fractures during use to continually expose fresh cutting edges, providing stronger cutting performance and longer abrasive life in demanding applications.
Yes. Resin fiber discs must be supported by a compatible backing pad during use. This 4-1/2" disc uses a matching 4-1/2" backing pad designed for a right-angle grinder. Backing pads are sold separately.
Use 24–36 grit for heavy grinding, weld removal, shaping, and aggressive stock removal. Use 50–60 grit for general grinding, deburring, and weld blending. Use 80–120 grit when you need finer blending, smoothing, or preparation before another finishing operation.
Yes. Zirconia is particularly well suited to steel and stainless steel because the grain performs effectively under the sustained pressure and heat generated during demanding grinding applications. Benchmark also lists these discs for cast iron, titanium, nickel, wrought iron, and other materials.
Yes. Benchmark's current specifications include wood among the supported materials. Zirconia's aggressive cutting action makes it useful for heavy sanding and material removal, although pressure and heat should be controlled to avoid excessive gouging or burning.
No. These zirconia resin fiber discs are for dry use only. Do not use them wet.
The maximum rated speed for these 4-1/2" zirconia resin fiber discs is 13,300 RPM. Never exceed the rated speed of the disc, backing pad, or grinder. Always operate at the lowest maximum RPM specified among the components being used.
Choose Ceramic for demanding production environments, difficult-to-grind metals, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and applications where maximum cutting speed and abrasive life are the highest priorities. Zirconia provides an excellent middle ground between economical Aluminum Oxide and premium Ceramic, offering strong cutting performance and longer life at a lower cost than Ceramic.
