Product Specification

6" X 1/2" X 1" COTTON SPIRAL SEWN BUFFING WHEEL

Built for the cutting and initial polishing stages, our Cotton spiral sewn buffing wheel has a firm, tightly stitched construction that allows more pressure to be applied than softer buffing wheels. This added firmness helps the wheel work efficiently with cutting and intermediate compounds to remove fine sanding marks, oxidation, and surface imperfections while beginning to develop gloss.

Made in the USA from cotton and constructed with closely spaced spiral stitching, this wheel is an excellent starting point for multi-stage metal polishing. Once the surface has been refined, move to a softer cushion-sewn, loose cotton, or flannel wheel for the later coloring and final-polishing stages.

Product Features

  • Firm, tightly spiral-sewn cotton construction
  • Designed for cutting and initial polishing
  • Supports greater polishing pressure than softer buffing wheels
  • Helps remove fine sanding marks, oxidation, and minor surface imperfections
  • Excellent first wheel in a multi-stage polishing process
  • Works with cutting and intermediate buffing compounds
  • Reusable with proper care
  • Made in the USA

Machines Used On

Best suited for:

  • Bench buffers
  • Bench grinders configured for buffing
  • Polishing motors
  • Other compatible rotary polishing equipment

Always confirm proper arbor fit and operating speed before use.

Applications

Well suited for cutting and initial polishing of:

  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Stainless steel
  • Steel
  • Zinc
  • Chrome and nickel-plated surfaces when light intermediate polishing is required

Because spiral-sewn wheels are relatively firm, use caution on thin plating and delicate surfaces.

Polishing Performance

Cut Medium–High
Gloss Medium
Stage Cutting / Initial Polish
Wheel Firmness Firm
Best For Surface refinement before coloring and final polishing

Tip: Use this wheel to establish the surface before moving to a softer wheel. A spiral-sewn wheel is generally not the best choice for the final high-gloss coloring stage.

6' X 1/2' X 1' Cotton Spiral Sewn Buffing Wheel

After the cutting stage, clean the workpiece and move to the appropriate softer wheel and finer compound for the desired finish.

For best results, dedicate one wheel to each compound to prevent contamination between polishing stages.

Safety Tips & Techniques

  • Apply compound lightly to the spinning wheel.
  • Use controlled pressure and allow the compound and wheel to do the cutting.
  • Keep the workpiece moving to prevent excessive heat buildup.
  • Clean the workpiece thoroughly before changing polishing stages.
  • Use extra care around edges, corners, thin materials, and plated surfaces.
  • Wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection.
  • Keep applicable machine guards in place.
  • Do not exceed the operating limits of the wheel, machine, spindle, or mounting system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spiral-sewn wheels are primarily used for cutting and initial polishing. Their tightly stitched construction creates a firmer wheel that works well with cutting compounds to refine the surface before later polishing stages.
A spiral-sewn wheel is firmer and more aggressive because its stitching holds the layers tightly together. A cushion-sewn wheel has more flexibility and conformity, making it better suited for intermediate polishing and coloring.
It can remove fine sanding marks, light scratches, oxidation, and minor surface imperfections when paired with the appropriate cutting compound. Deep scratches should be removed through sanding or another appropriate surface-preparation step before buffing.
Generally, no. Its firm construction makes it better suited for the cutting and initial-polishing stages. For maximum gloss, move to a softer cushion-sewn, loose cotton, or flannel wheel with the appropriate finishing compound.
Yes. The wheel provides the physical support and carries the compound against the workpiece. The compound supplies most of the actual abrasive cutting and polishing action.
That depends on the material and polishing stage. Black cutting compounds are commonly used for steel and stainless steel, while brown cutting compounds are commonly used for aluminum, brass, and copper. Follow with progressively finer compounds as needed.
We recommend one wheel per compound. Residue from a coarse compound can contaminate a finer polishing stage and create scratches in a surface you have already refined.
Switch once the scratches, oxidation, or surface imperfections targeted during the cutting stage have been removed. Softer wheels provide greater conformity and are better suited for developing the final color and gloss.
This 6" wheel has a 1" arbor and is primarily intended for compatible bench buffers, polishing motors, and bench grinders configured for buffing. Arbor adapters are available separately for certain smaller spindle sizes.
The operating range for this 6" buffing wheel is 2,500–2,700 RPM. Always verify that the wheel, machine, spindle, arbor adapter, and mounting system are compatible before use.
