1" X 150' ALUMINUM OXIDE SHOP ROLL

Benchmark Abrasives 1" x 150' Shop Rolls provide a convenient supply of flexible aluminum oxide abrasive cloth for hand sanding, surface preparation, cleaning, and light deburring. Simply pull out the amount you need, tear it from the roll, and shape or fold the cloth around the stationary workpiece.

The narrow 1" width is especially useful when working on smaller areas, edges, contours, tubing, and locations where a wider abrasive strip would be less convenient. A flexible J-weight polycotton cloth backing helps the abrasive conform to the workpiece while resin-on-resin bonding securely holds the aluminum oxide grain during dry hand-sanding applications.

As a general guide, lower grit numbers provide more aggressive material removal, while higher grit numbers produce finer sanding and surface refinement. Start with the least aggressive grit that will efficiently accomplish the work, then progress through finer grits when a smoother finish is required.

How Shop Rolls Are Used

Shop Rolls are designed for dry hand sanding on a stationary workpiece. Tear off the length required and use the abrasive flat, folded, wrapped around the workpiece, or shaped by hand to reach the area being sanded.

They are particularly useful when a pre-cut abrasive sheet or powered sanding product is unnecessary or cannot easily conform to the workpiece.

Safety Tips & Techniques

  • Wear appropriate eye, respiratory, and hand protection for the material being sanded.
  • Sand in a controlled manner and avoid excessive pressure that can unnecessarily load or wear the abrasive.
  • Use progressively finer grits when working toward a smoother surface.
  • Use dry only. Keep the workpiece stationary; never apply hand-held abrasive cloth directly to rotating machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Shop Roll is a continuous roll of flexible abrasive cloth designed primarily for hand sanding. You tear off only the amount needed for each job, making it convenient for fabrication, maintenance, woodworking, plumbing, and general shop use.
Shop Rolls are sometimes searched for or referred to as emery cloth, but this Benchmark Abrasives Shop Roll uses aluminum oxide abrasive grain, not natural emery.
The 1" width is the narrowest Benchmark Abrasives Shop Roll option, making it a good choice for localized sanding, smaller workpieces, edges, contours, tubing, and areas where a wider strip would be cumbersome.
None. This Shop Roll is designed for manual hand sanding on a stationary workpiece. Do not install or use it on a belt sander, drum sander, or other powered sanding machine.
No. This Shop Roll is intended for dry sanding only.
Use lower grits such as 60–100 for more aggressive sanding and material removal, middle grits for general smoothing and surface preparation, and finer grits such as 320–600 when progressively refining the surface. The best starting grit depends on the material and condition of the workpiece.
Yes. Pull out the amount required for the job and tear or cut it to the desired length.
