Product Specification
4-1/2" x 4" ALUMINUM OXIDE FLAP SANDING DRUM
The Benchmark Abrasives 4-1/2" x 4" Aluminum Oxide Flap Sanding Drum is built for high-output stock removal, surface leveling, deburring, and weld blending across large work areas. Its wide 4" working face and durable flap construction provide the aggressive cutting action needed for production work while maintaining the control required to blend welds, knock down high spots, remove surface buildup, and prepare parts for finer finishing.
Heavy X-weight cloth supports the aluminum oxide abrasive under demanding use, while the layered flap design continually exposes fresh cutting edges as the drum wears. This helps maintain consistent cutting performance while allowing the drum to follow irregular surfaces more effectively than a rigid grinding wheel. Available in 40, 60, 80, 120, 180, and 240 grit, it gives you a practical progression from aggressive material removal through scratch refinement and pre-finishing.

Features
- Aluminum oxide abrasive provides dependable cutting action for stock removal, deburring, blending, and surface preparation.
- Heavy X-weight cloth backing supports the abrasive flaps during demanding grinding and finishing applications.
- Layered flap construction continually exposes fresh abrasive as the drum wears to help maintain consistent cutting performance.
- Wide 4" working face covers broad surface areas efficiently and helps produce more uniform results.
- Multiple grit options from 40 through 240 grit support aggressive material removal through finer surface refinement.
- Flexible flap design follows surface contours better than rigid grinding media while maintaining effective cutting action.
- Designed for portable surface-finishing and drum-sanding machines using the appropriate keyed mounting setup.
Applications & Performance
Designed for applications where controlled material removal is needed before finer finishing or polishing.
- Stock removal and surface leveling
- Deburring and edge cleanup
- Weld cleaning and weld blending
- Blending scratches and parting lines
- Removing oxidation and light surface buildup
- Preparing surfaces for finer finishing steps
- Creating a more uniform surface before final conditioning
Materials include:
- Steel
- Stainless steel
- Cast iron
- Copper
- Brass
- Tin
- Wood
- Fiberglass
- Plastic
- Hard rubber
For stainless steel work, keep abrasives used on stainless separate from abrasives previously used on carbon steel to reduce the risk of iron contamination and rust spotting.
Machine Compatibility
Designed for portable surface finishing machines, linear grinders, burnishers, contouring grinders, and drum sanding machines.
Compatible examples include:
- Eastwood® Contour SCT® (21145)
- HERCULES® HE68 Surface Conditioning Tool (70979)
- Metabo® SE 17-200 RT with the appropriate keyed drum arbor
An adapter or additional mounting hardware may be required. Use a setup that securely holds a 4-1/2" diameter x 4" wide drum, allows proper guard clearance, and operates at or below 4,000 RPM.
Safety Tips
- Never exceed the drum's maximum speed of 4,000 RPM. Maximum RPM is a safety limit, not a recommended finishing speed.
- Use dry only.
- Start with light pressure and allow the abrasive to cut. Excessive pressure can shorten abrasive life and generate unnecessary heat.
- Disconnect the machine from its power source before installing, removing, or inspecting the drum.
- Confirm that the drum is properly seated and securely retained before operation.
- Stop immediately if abnormal vibration occurs and inspect the drum, mounting hardware, and setup before continuing.
- Keep machine guards and auxiliary handles installed as specified by the tool manufacturer.
- Wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and hand protection for the material and application.
- Secure the workpiece and keep loose clothing, hair, and hands away from rotating components.
- Do not use these wide sanding drums on electric drills.
