Benchmark Abrasives 4-1/2" silicon carbide resin fiber discs deliver fast cutting action and a consistent scratch pattern on non-ferrous metals, masonry, stone, glass, fiberglass, plastics, hard rubber, and selected wood applications. Silicon carbide is an extremely hard, sharp, and highly friable abrasive grain that fractures readily during use to expose fresh cutting edges, making it especially effective on hard, brittle materials and surfaces where conventional metal-grinding abrasives are not the best choice.
Each disc uses silicon carbide abrasive electrostatically bonded to a heavy-duty vulcanized fiber backing with heat-resistant phenolic resin. The rigid fiber backing provides strong support under grinding pressure and helps transfer power efficiently to the workpiece for controlled stock removal. Available from aggressive 16 grit through finer 120 grit, these discs can handle heavy material removal, shaping, deburring, blending, and surface preparation across a wide range of non-ferrous and non-metal applications.
These discs are designed for use on right-angle grinders with a compatible 4-1/2" backing pad. A backing pad is required and sold separately.

Backing Pad Required: Use with a compatible 4-1/2" x 5/8"-11 resin fiber disc backing pad. Backing pads are sold separately.
Use only with a grinder, guard, backing pad, and retaining hardware approved for the same disc diameter and attachment. The grinder's rated speed must not exceed the maximum RPM of the lowest-rated component in the system.

Not Recommended for Steel or Stainless Steel: While silicon carbide is extremely hard and sharp, it is highly friable and breaks down too quickly under the sustained grinding pressure typically used on steel. For carbon steel and stainless steel, Benchmark recommends Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia, or Ceramic resin fiber discs depending on the application and desired performance level.
Tip: Silicon carbide cuts quickly because its sharp grain fractures readily during use. Use controlled pressure and allow the abrasive to cut rather than forcing the grinder excessively, especially on brittle materials such as stone, glass, or composites.
Silicon Carbide vs. Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia & Ceramic
Silicon Carbide is the preferred choice for masonry, stone, glass, many non-ferrous materials, and other hard or brittle surfaces. Its extremely sharp, friable grain cuts quickly and produces a consistent scratch pattern, but it wears too rapidly to be the best option for sustained steel grinding.
Aluminum oxide is the economical, versatile choice for general-purpose grinding on steel and a broad range of everyday shop applications.
Zirconia provides greater durability and longer life than Aluminum Oxide under sustained grinding pressure, making it an excellent choice for heavier steel fabrication, weld removal, and stock removal.
Ceramic is the premium choice for demanding production grinding, stainless steel, hard alloys, and applications where maximum cutting speed and abrasive life are the priority.

Choosing the correct abrasive grain is just as important as choosing the correct grit. Silicon Carbide should be selected for the materials it excels on rather than simply as a more aggressive alternative to conventional metal-grinding abrasives.
Safety Tips & Techniques
- Always use a compatible backing pad specifically designed for resin fiber discs.
- Inspect the disc and backing pad before use. Do not use damaged, cracked, torn, or moisture-compromised discs.
- Never operate the grinder above the maximum RPM marked for the disc or backing pad. The grinder's rated speed must not exceed the lowest accessory rating; follow all tool and accessory instructions.
- Keep the grinder guard properly installed and positioned.
