5" SILICON CARBIDE RESIN FIBER DISC – 25 PACK

Benchmark Abrasives 5" silicon carbide resin fiber discs deliver fast cutting action and a consistent scratch pattern on masonry, stone, glass, non-ferrous metals, fiberglass, plastics, hard rubber, and selected wood applications. Silicon carbide is an extremely hard, sharp, and highly friable abrasive grain that fractures readily during use to expose fresh cutting edges, making it especially effective on hard, brittle, and non-ferrous materials.

Each disc uses silicon carbide abrasive electrostatically bonded to heavy-duty vulcanized fiber backing with heat-resistant phenolic resin. The backing provides strong support under grinding pressure and helps transfer power efficiently to the workpiece for controlled stock removal. Available from aggressive 16 grit through finer 120 grit, these discs cover heavy material removal, shaping, deburring, blending, and surface preparation. A backing pad is required and sold separately.

Not Recommended for Steel or Stainless Steel: Silicon carbide breaks down too quickly under the sustained grinding pressure typically used on steel. Benchmark recommends Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia, or Ceramic resin fiber discs for steel applications instead. The current product page also specifically cautions against steel and stainless steel use.

Tip: Silicon carbide cuts quickly because its sharp grain fractures readily during use. Use controlled pressure and allow the abrasive to cut rather than forcing the grinder excessively.

Silicon Carbide vs. Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia & Ceramic

Silicon Carbide

Silicon Carbide is the preferred choice for masonry, stone, glass, many non-ferrous materials, and other hard or brittle surfaces. Its sharp, friable grain cuts quickly but wears too rapidly to be the best option for sustained steel grinding.

Aluminum Oxide

Aluminum oxide is the economical choice for general-purpose steel grinding and everyday shop work.

Zirconia

Zirconia provides longer life and stronger performance under sustained grinding pressure, making it well suited to heavier steel fabrication and weld removal.

Ceramic

Ceramic is the premium choice for demanding production grinding, stainless steel, hard alloys, and applications where cutting speed and abrasive life are the priority.

Safety Tips & Techniques

  • Always use a compatible backing pad specifically designed for resin fiber discs.
  • Inspect the disc and backing pad before use. Do not use damaged, cracked, torn, or moisture-compromised discs.
  • Never exceed the maximum RPM marked for the disc, backing pad, or grinder.
  • Keep the grinder guard properly installed and positioned.
  • Use appropriate eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, protective clothing, and respiratory protection.
  • Use appropriate eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, protective clothing, and respiratory protection.
  • Use controlled working pressure and allow the silicon carbide grain to cut.
  • Keep the grinder moving across the workpiece to help control heat and avoid gouging.
  • Store fiber discs in a clean, dry environment to protect the backing from moisture and damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Silicon carbide resin fiber discs are used for grinding, sanding, shaping, deburring, blending, and surface preparation on materials such as stone, marble, granite, concrete, glass, copper, fiberglass, plastics, hard rubber, and selected wood applications.
Silicon carbide is an extremely hard and sharp abrasive grain. It is also highly friable, meaning the grain fractures readily during use and continually exposes fresh cutting edges.
No. Benchmark does not recommend these discs for steel or stainless steel because performance is poor compared with Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia, or Ceramic abrasives.
Yes. Stone, marble, granite, concrete, and other masonry materials are among the primary applications for these discs.
Yes. Silicon carbide is well suited to glass deburring because its sharp grain performs effectively on hard, brittle materials.
Yes. Copper and other non-ferrous materials are listed applications for these discs.
Yes. This 5" disc requires a compatible 5" backing pad for use on a right-angle grinder. Backing pads are sold separately.
The maximum rated speed for these 5" Silicon Carbide Resin Fiber Discs is 12,200 RPM. Never exceed the rated speed of the disc, backing pad, or grinder.
Choose Silicon Carbide for stone, masonry, glass, non-ferrous materials, and other hard or brittle surfaces. Choose Ceramic primarily for demanding metal grinding, especially stainless steel, titanium, hard alloys, and production applications.
