How To Change Or Replace An Angle Grinder Wheel

How To Change Or Replace An Angle Grinder Wheel

We demonstrate numerous techniques for changing an angle grinder wheel. Even if you don't have your spanner wrench, you can still accomplish this in a number of ways. Do not fret; there is yet hope!

HOW TO USE A SPANNER WRENCH TO CHANGE AN ANGLE GRINDER WHEEL?

What Do You Require?

  • An angle grinder.
  • Your angle grinder's included spanner wrench; a different one might or might not work because different models utilize different sizes.
  • A grinding wheel.

Here's how to use a spanner wrench to replace a grinder wheel:

Step 1. Find the wheel lock button, which is typically on the top. When you feel the wheel lock into place, press it down and turn the wheel.

Step 2. The flange is the nut-like, spherical element that holds the wheel in place. While holding down the button, insert the two knobs of the spanner wrench into two opposing holes in the flange.

Step 3. Turn the spanner wrench counterclockwise while maintaining pressure on the wheel lock button until you notice the flange loosening.

Step 4. The flange must be removed manually.

Step 5. Put on your fresh angle grinder wheel and perform the procedure the other way.

ANGLE GRINDER WHEEL REPLACEMENT WITHOUT SPANNER WRENCH

You can lose your spanner wrench at times; it frequently occurs.

What do you require?

  • An angle grinder.
  • A set of gloves.
  • A grinding wheel.

To replace an angle grinder wheel without a spanner wrench, follow these steps:

Step 1. When the wheel locks into position, maintain pressure on the wheel lock button.

Step 2. Grab the wheel and crank it anticlockwise while wearing gloves until you feel the flange release.

Step 3. The flange must be removed manually.

Step 4. Reverse the operation and swap the wheel.

This approach is effective, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, we always use a spanner wrench to make sure the wheel is sufficiently tight because we don't feel as confident tightening the wheel by hand.

Second, we don't advise using this technique with thin abrasive cutting wheels because they are more likely to break or weaken. You might unintentionally set up a scenario in which your cutting or abrasive wheels malfunction and cause harm.

Another method used by many professionals is to loosen the concrete by moving a wheel over it rather than by hand. Both approaches are effective but have the same risks. Personally, we prefer to loosen things manually.

THE SIMPLEST WAY TO REPLACE A GRINDER WHEEL

My preferred method for changing an angle grinder wheel entails replacing the factory-installed flange with a Hilti Kwik-Lock flange. We first used it on the 36V grinder from Hilti, and we think it's a great addition to any machine with the same 5/8-inch arbor.

Its clever design makes it possible to hand thread and tighten/loosen with just one hand. It's incredibly easy and completely secure.

Two holes allow you to insert a spanner wrench to loosen it up if your grinder wheel ends up helping it get too tight.

This is what you require:

  • An angle grinder.
  • A flange from Hilti Kwik Lock.
  • A grinding wheel.

Here's how to swap out an angle grinder wheel quickly and easily:

Step 1. When the wheel locks, turn it on while maintaining pressure on the wheel lock button.

Step 2. By hand, turn the Kwik Lock flange anticlockwise until it becomes loose. Before it finally releases itself, you will first feel the spring tension move.

Step 3. The flange must be removed manually.

Step 4. Reverse the operation and swap the wheel.

The drawback is that each of these flanges costs a little over $50. For a DIYer, that might be too expensive. For professionals who frequently use grinders, having a few of them on hand can make life simpler.
