Starting a Metal Fabricating Shop - What to Buy

Starting a metal fabricating business demands a well-equipped workshop, where the right tools and equipment are critical for achieving precision, safety, and efficiency.

With the guide below, you’ll be able to build your shop on a budget for around $3k on the low side or make a few upgrades (like swapping out the engine hoist and drill press for a gantry crane and a bench top milling machine) and still only spend as high as $5k. On the flip side, our non-budget-friendly shop comes in around $16k.
PRO TIP: If you’re just starting, we suggest aiming for the low end and upgrading tools and splurging on the more high-end equipment after you have some fabricating time under your belt.

Hearing Protection

FR Clothing
“No Shirt…because I die like a man” – Jason Hurst
Of course, Jason is totally kidding. Choosing to forgo a shirt in a metal fabricating workshop is highly inadvisable due to the extreme risks involved, despite any humorous or bold intent. Exposed skin is vulnerable to burns from welding sparks, cuts from sharp metal, and abrasions from grinding or handling materials, all of which are common in metalwork.
A heavy-duty, flame-resistant long-sleeve shirt is strongly recommended to protect the upper body, complementing other protective gear like a leather apron and gloves. Safety standards in fabrication prioritize full coverage to minimize injury, ensuring fabricators can work effectively and safely without unnecessary risk.
